Well, it's indeed the busiest time of year in the retail world and as a small business owner I rely on such advertising tools as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and many others to promote my range of products and services. So here's how the story goes....
Last Wednesday night I was do doing my usual Instagram posts, commenting on other peoples post and casually joined a game of tag, everything was just business as usual in the Instagram world, but all of a sudden whilst tagging my first comment on a game of tag a horrible pop up message appeared stating that 'Based on previous use of this feature, your account has been temporarily blocked from taking this action. This block will expire next Thursday. We restrict certain content and actions to protect our community. Tell us if you think we mad a mistake'. This followed by emails requesting to change my password, which I had to do 3 times over!
Um....Damn right you made a mistake!!! So at this point in time i'm having thoughts like.... 'Revenge is a dish best served cold' going on in my head! I seriously watch to many Tarantino movies!!
Immediately panic set in! Then every swear word under the sun, followed by me yelling at my veteran IT husband to fix the problem now (He should know what to do right? He's an IT geek!)! Trust me none of this helped the situation! As the night went on and numerous reports being sent to Instagram, followed by emails (who have still not replied to me) I then started to receive direct messages from other friends and businesses who were cursed with the same problem. As you can imagine, the direct messages were also filled with many naughty words and more freaking out! Apologies to the people who received phone calls from me absolutely losing my shit! So what now? I thought, I better let my followers know what's going on, so I posted a picture with text explaining the situation. Apologies to my stockists that I cannot tag into my product images, to the people I cannot reply to and the regrams that I cannot credit.
So after my anger somewhat calmed I began to do my research and realised that I am able to like pictures, direct message and post a picture on my wall, but I cannot comment on posts or add content to my posts....epic huh? So what does one do in this situation.... You change the name of your personal account to your business name (@kreohome1), you post a photo with your business account and then use your personal account to add the content. Problem is with that is that the content gets lost in the feed of other comments and hashtags do not work for that photo that was posted.
Why did this happen? Was I hacked? Did I do something wrong? I have no idea! Based on my research the system seems to think that I am a spam account using bots to gain followers by tagging other accounts. I can assure you that I'm not a bot and I have never purchased followers... I'm the real deal!
Here is some important information about using Instagram and how this sort of situation can be avoided:
If you're getting an error when posting a comment, you may be using an outdated version of Instagram. Try updating your app to the latest version. (Trust me... that didn't help!)
If your Instagram app is up to date, your comment may be failing for a different reason:
Instagram have these guidelines in place to help reduce spam on Instagram.
When you post a comment that fits any of the three reasons above, you'll receive a pop-up warning prompting you to learn more about commenting or delete your comment. We're also filtering certain words and phrases. We hope to encourage genuine interactions between people on Instagram.
Due to the fact that this has happened, we have decided to change things up a bit. Our #KreoLovesLocal blog post that goes live every Wednesday will be postponed until next Wednesday, and it will be the biggest line up of local creatives that you have ever seen, so get hastagging! (You will not be blocked by doing this...just saying). To the lovely creatives that have sent out products for a Kreo Home review, they are all scheduled in for next week in order to give your business the best possible coverage. To all the local businesses that have sent over Christmas gifts (thank you so much!), and purchases that I have made myself, I will be posting photos next week.
I would like to thank each and everyone one of you for your ongoing support and understanding during this time. Your words of encouragement and your rants to Instagram directly mean the world to me! You guys rock! Hope to be back in action on Thursday! Until then we will ride out this wave!
One question remains........
