Five Minutes With Ruchi Rai Abstract Artist

It's always awesome to hear the story behind the brand. Remember we are not just buying a product, we are buying someone's journey, inspiration and love for what they do. Here's the story of Ruchi Rai, abstract artist and one of our amazing suppliers at Kreo Home.

Tell us about yourself and your brand?
My name is Ruchi Rai, 49 yrs (the big 50 next year)! I am an abstract artist based in Sydney. I have a beautiful family of a very loving and supportive husband, my two daughters 18 and 15 and a cheeky golden Labrador who’s 3. As I’m originally from New Delhi, India my journey with Colours and design started long time ago in India when I completed my 3 year course in textile design. In Delhi I gained experience working with some design houses and explored the art of freehand painting on chiffon and silk sarees. My husband and I have been married for 25 years and we moved to Australia in 1994 and have since called Australia home. I got so busy settling down and having babies I completely lost touch with art and creativity. With my creative juices flowing I gathered courage again and re-ignited my passion for art by enrolling in Cert IV in Colour & Design in 2011 and 2012 - 2013 further studied Surface Design from ISCD (International School of Colour & Design) in North Sydney.

Where does your inspiration come from?
To me art is a form of expression. Every time I see a beautiful colour I would want to use it on the canvas. I would try different colour combinations and shapes and that’s how my abstract pieces came to life. I mainly work with acrylics, washes and sometimes ink. I believe in spontaneity and free flow of strokes and my affiliation with Indian textiles reflects in my art with bold colours, textures and pattern. Each piece is started with some visual understanding of its flow and direction and as it progresses it takes its own path and slowly develops its own character , story and
depth. I love to create art for real homes which resonates and connects to their homeowners. An art that I would love to and be proud to have in my living room.

What's next for your business?
Along with my abstract pieces of art I am also in the process of producing hand painted cushions. Each cushion will be individually hand painted and each are unique. They are hand stitched here in Sydney and will soon be available to buy at Kreo Home!
